Honestly speaking, when I wrote the last post I really wasn't expecting feedback, but boy, did I get feedback!! First of all thank you for sharing your thoughts and this is one of the times I miss college where you can get together with a bunch of friends and just chat about a given topic. I wish I could have you guys over with a large pizza and a couple bottles of wine to just talk about relationships and anything else under the sun.

At first, I was a little taken aback because my ways of thought were being challenged, but then it dawned on me that that actually will help me grow as an individual and not be stuck in an outdated way of thinking. Awesome!!

So let's jump in, for those who haven't read the original post, click here, also check out the comments they have been very insightful. Now to address the comments:

What Do Women Want?
Robert Gibson asked a really good question, what do we as women want and to be honest some of us don't know. Society, aka the media, romance novels, Disney movies, rom com's, have given us a generic concept of what we want - tall, dark and handsome, sensitive yet masculine, blah, blah, blah - but then we have what we see in our immediate lives. Yes, a woman might be looking for a nice guy but then she sees how her single mom had to struggle and work to maintain the family without a man. She sees how to be strong and not needing a man but still expects her man to be strong and be a man because that is what society says she should expect from a man. God I don't even know if I'm making sense. LOL!

The only thing, I can say is know yourself, be the best you, when you got that down pack, be on the lookout for people who got their isht together. You see, when you have two whole people who know who they are and are just enjoying life they will only enhance each others' lives instead of bringing new drama.

Two Alphas in The House
One of my friends from High School, astluce, pointed out that both she and her husband are Alphas. For real, this blew my mind and gave me hope. It also showed that I got sucked into the whole propaganda of men not being able to handle a strong woman. Looking back at it, I think it is the men who can't handle a strong woman that complain the most. *smh*

I mentioned before that I worked at a hardware store and it is only now I realize that some of those men don't know what to do with a strong woman. I know for a fact that I've toned down over the last seven years because I've seen actual fear in some men's eyes or they try to be condescending when or have the look of what should they do. Also in the construction industry down here, it's all chat and some of these men can't deliver, now I'm kinda pissed that I've changed to make others feel comfortable.

Truth be told (I'm going to be sappy here, I've accepted my sappiness and you should too) astluce and her husband are really a cute couple and their relationship is something to aim for. I'm just happy that they've pointed out that yes, two strong people can be together and make it work. It reminds me of the focus exercise Tony Robbins does in his seminars where if you focus on something, you see it wherever you look and if you really focus you can see very successful, strong couples.

I must agree with her, though, I may not find my significant other on this rock called Wadadli, perhaps I should hang out with the Italians down at English Harbour. "Ciao, bello!"

The Evolution of Gender Roles

Robby Breadner gave me hope by stating that not men are locked into gender specific roles. I always felt that I was wrong in being able to handle my own DIY stuff. I never came to work and proudly said how I fixed my toilet or installed a light fixture. That's not something women go around gloating about, but it's nice to know that as we evolve as humans we are doing away with traditional roles and just being human, doing what needs to be done.

The only thing is that not all of us are evolved. There are a lot of people who hold on to old ideas because they have never worked out what would work for them as individuals. They take them on as their beliefs and when those beliefs are questioned, they fight for them like wild cats.

There is a lot of talk about class warfare, but has anyone ever thought about ideological warfare. The divide between the thinkers and the non-thinkers, those whose lives are based on a true understanding of themselves and their needs and those who follow any and every thing, be it the latest dance hall tune to the drug dealer they look up to. The sad thing is, in Wadadli at least, I see the latter overtaking the island and creating more.

I really appreciate the insight from the comments to the last Why Am I Single post, I think they help me to escape the labyrinth of singledom. I'm going to stop here, because this post is long enough. Buena notte, tutti.

Answer #9: I don't need a man

Let me first say that that statement is wrong, words are power and they can affect your life. That statement is said over and over by women more to empower themselves as opposed to bring down or insult men. The problem is when we say it so much it becomes our reality. Yes, I'm spouting new age-y stuff, but it's the truth.

So far, I have done so much for myself which would have been things women would have turned to men for. I've changed the ceiling light fixture in my living room. I've changed the fill valve in my toilet. I've disposed of a dead frog with maggots on it (hyperventilating a little now). I've disposed of a recently dead mouse. On and on and on. So after doing all that, why would I need a man? would be a very fair question. Well Jill Scott answers that question very well here

You see there was this guy that just gelled with me, but now looking back at it now (damn 20/20 hindsight) I kept pushing him away. I got mugged and I didn't tell him, I just glossed over it and I could hear in his voice that he would have wanted to hear about it, be there for me. After reading all these post you can see that I'm a little behind on things (book smart, street dumb).

Honestly speaking this post was inspired by this post I came across by Evan Marc Katz. The post was a response to an email from a woman who wanted to know if a smart, strong, successful woman can get a smart, strong, successful man. After reading this, I've come to the conclusion that the answer is no, that was when it really sank in. I've heard it so many times, in so many ways and only now do I get it.

There can only be one Alpha in a relationship. To be a successful person, you have to be an Alpha, for the most part anyway. And when you look at it in relationships you need to be with someone who compliments you and not be exactly like you. You know the whole yin and yang thing.

So the question I have for myself is

Do I want to be an Alpha or a Beta in a relationship?

Honestly speaking, no, I don't want to be an Alpha.

I'm tired of being the strong one, the shoulder to cry on, the person people ask for advice or ...... Sometimes, most times, I want to turn to someone. I want someone else to take the wheel while I sleep in the backseat. Perhaps my ideal is the hybrid of the Alpha and the Beta, so that the roles are interchangeable.

Lord, I'm getting depressed now. What do you think, people?

For the ladies, do you think adopting the notion that you don't need a man hinders your ability to get a man?
Are women nowadays, pushing men away by not needing them financially and for protection, but more for emotional support?

Answer #8: I Don't Approach Men

Somewhere there is an unspoken (correction: spoken by those who are forthright enough to say it) rule that men are suppose to approach women. And it is because of this rule, women don't approach men. I guess there is also that feeling that men will not like it if a woman approach them. Perhaps, it will make a woman look desperate if she steps to a man. But here is a little advertised fact that I came across thanks to Paul Carrick Brunson, a modern day match maker,

If a man approaches a woman, his chances of being successful is 30%
If a woman approaches a man, her chances of success is 50%

This made me go, hmmmm. My chances for success is better than the average man's chances....... hmmm. Veddy, veddy interesting. This got me thinking about a post on the blog called The Dating Truth titled "How To Overcome Your Fear Of Asking Someone on A Date". What she said seemed do-able, so I think I'm going to challenge myself.

The Challenge: To approach random attractive men, engage them and then ask for their number.

The key word here is to engage the men and not come off like this. Basically, make them feel comfortable and interested and then ask for their number. It will be an interesting exercise because I will get practice and it will help me build my confidence.

The rules:

Only men I am attracted to, this will push me out of my comfort zone.
During the conversation, find out if they have a significant other. I am not about to get a beat down for any man that I have no intention of seeing again.
The numbers are just to be collected. Push come to shove if there is a connection, I'll create my own little black book.
Don't break hearts or hurt feelings.
Be nice, be open and be honest.
In this blog record how I got the numbers in batches of three.

So here it is, my ever so mad challenge. If you can think of anything else I can add to the rules, comment below.

The other day my mom turned to me and asked why all of a sudden I'm so into food. Truth be told, I think I was always into food. I remember that when I was a kid I used to bake cakes and cup cakes every Sunday (from the cake mix, shhh). I don't know why but every time I did the cakes they came out great, the right amount of moisture, just the the right amount of spongieness (yes, new word, people!). I even did a little business of selling the cakes to a family friend who ran a restaurant. Unfortunately, I stopped baking on the regular and I got intimidated by cooking a little, but I'm over it now and I'm all into trying new recipes. Okay, at first, I thought this was going to be like JackAss, I was wrong. This just blew my mind. I'm speechless.

Now for the last instalment my thoughts on the trailers featured on the playlist of trailers created by good friend and FB buddy, Ms Andreen S. Shall we....

13. I am not religious, but there is something about listening to a choir that does something to the soul. I love that they made this film because it's something that I would not have thought to make a film about, but now that it's made, it feels right. Does that even make sense?

14. Another film that should be made and watched. It's sad that this happens in America and that it has similarities to places like Iran and Afghanistan where women are imprisoned when they were raped. I want to see this film, I want to give this woman a hug and I want to see what happened to her.

15. This looks powerful. That's all I got to say.

16. I love how it takes poetry out of the books and gives kids a way of expressing themselves and uniting with others who are just like them. Growing up, I would just write, but it never was put out there for people to read and I'm so happy about how far technology and the human spirit has taken this art form. Simply Awesome.

17. I think I would like to take my mom to see this and ask if any memories come to mind. LOL! Can you imagine a documentary in the future about the music we listen to now. Lord, save us all.

18. I'm still not sure about this movie. Something in me tells me that it has many layers and deals with many issues that will leave people uncomfortable, but isn't that what like is about, being uncomfortable.

It was one of the last times I attended NYC Fashion Week and I had gone with some friends. Now, fashion week is all about going to the fashion shows which were usually in the tents at Bryant Part. The shows were scheduled for every half hour and just imagine fashionably dressed men and women herding in an out of beautifully decorated rooms. In between you can visit the sponsors various boots in the lounge area and sometimes there would be an liqueur company as a sponsor. That was the case that time or was it just a bar, whatever the case, I was drinking a cosmopolitan for the first time and getting tipsy.

Next thing I know, there is this carmel toned guy with the most divine eyes. I love eyes, I thought you should know. So he struck up a conversation, I found out he was a boxer and he had just boxed in Los Vegas. He even asked for my number which I gave him. I soon after left the tents and told my friend about him, she said it was probably a line.

Even before she said that I already had a negative dialogue going on in my head.

What does he really want?

Anyway, I made my way home and to bed (natural thing for me to do especially when I'm tipsy). In the middle of the night my phone rings, El Boxer is on the phone, asking me to go out the next night. Long story short, I said yes, then the next evening I chickened out using the excuse that they weather report was saying a hurricane was coming and I, being Caribbean, don't play around with hurricanes. Lame, I know.

Anyhoo, that evening I looked him up online. Turns out he is not just any old boxer but one of the top boxers in his weight class. Then, when I went to work the next day, I told my friend and some of my co-workers. One of them saw the fight he fought on HBO. Ain't that a bitch!!

The sad thing about it is that did not change my ways, I remained cynical. Not only was I cynical but I didn't believe in myself to think I could handle myself with a man of his caliber.

Now, I know some people who live in Antigua know Big Apple Deli. It was owned by an older couple and the husband was big in the boxing scene in Antigua. The walls of the Big Apple Deli are covered with pictures torn out of boxing magazines and guess whose picture is up there? Ain't that a bitch.

So how do I get over my cynicism? I think it is all about mental conditioning, perhaps wearing a rubberband around my wrist and snapping myself when I have negative thoughts or think negatively of others' intentions. Why is self improvement so hard? I will persevere, as God is my witness.

I know we all have busy lives, but there is something about cooking a great dish and savouring each and every flavour that explodes in your mouth. As mentioned in the previous post, Ms. Andreen S. shared a playlist with me of trailers worth checking out and I already started to comment on the first six trailers. Here are my thoughts on the next six:

7. Why do I feel this might be my life story? LOL. It may not be as beautifully shot, or have many layers as the other movies, but sometimes it's nice to see black people being represented in Hollywood. Would I pay $15 to see it in the cinema? No. Would I watch it for $5 or catch it on HBO. Yeah, I think I would.

8. This is definitely for those who are into the history of hip hop and are fans of A Tribe Called Quest. I love how a group can create their own style and be in touch with their fans. Personally, it's not my cup of tea, but it will hit the spot for others.

9. I will be honest, I am not a fan of Elmo, I feel like he has out shone Sesame Street, so instead of a collective of different characters, Sesame Street is a vehicle for Elmo. But I love the story behind Elmo and I want to watch this film. God, I love how he stuck to his dream and has become successful, heck, more than successful.

10. Why do I want to hug this guy? And I can so relate with people's misconceptions of people being from anywhere in the world. Damn you, media for giving people the wrong idea. I don't normally watch film related movie, which is weird since I love the inspirational quality of them, but I would watch this movie.

11. I'm a little confused, at first they were speaking English, then German, then some other language with German subtitles. Then she kind of freaked me out with the death stare, but I warmed out when she started to sing a tune that I know and love.

12. This should be viewed by Black Americans first and foremost, because time has created a divide between those troubling times and now. I believe this film will be a needed education.

First things first,

Happy New Year!!!!

So far I've covered 5 reasons why I'm single and it has made me take a good look at myself. One of the things it had me think about is why I don't want to be single. I mean is it because I genuinely want to share my life with someone or is it me trying to appease society? I would see the pics of friends and relatives around my age getting married and having kids and yeah, it hits a nerve. It's the whole the grass is greener on the other side.

Aw, they are such a cute couple! I wish I had that.

I'm sure other singles have versions of the above in their minds while browsing FaceBook. I think after a certain age, being single is viewed as a negative thing. If you managed to climb Mount Everest, it will pale in comparison to a younger cousin getting married and another having her first child.

Honestly people, I'm over it. One set of people say you have to actively look for someone, date a lot and get out there and another set is telling you to just stop looking and he will enter your life. Ugh! So, ladies and gentlemen, I say "Bah humbug!!"

Ladies and gentlemen, I will not be looking for Mr. Right, I will become Ms. Right. Ms. Right for me, by my terms. The type of woman who is proud of herself and possesses a sense of confidence that negates any negative comments from others.

For too long, I've been trying to "do the right thing", the truth is there is no right thing. The world is full of shades of gray so it's impossible to say definitely that one course of action is right. This won't be long because I'm still groggy from partying last night. Part of me doesn't want to write about it because in my spirit, it wasn't all that. I mean yes, there was some awesome parts like dancing on one of the secondary stages (the gogo dancers kicked us off the main stage), meeting DJ Private Ryan and getting a hug and the following pic

(my sis took a pic with her cell), seeing tons of people I know and them being in various states of intoxication.

Unfortunately, I felt it was lacking something, midnight was meh, the fireworks was okay but monotonous. It's just weird because I won't say I'm a party animal but I like a good party and maybe I'm too sensitive but you can feel people's insecurities. You can feel people trying too hard, holding on to some semblance of cool that falls short. Maybe because I've reached that point where I believe that what people consider to be "cool" is accepting oneself and not giving a f*** not trying to look like what "cool people".

This post might sound like I'm hating on the party, but I don't hate the entire experience, I just see some room for improvement. One thing for sure Private Ryan delivered and to see him live was the main reason I went. He also was down to earth, I don't normally get excited by entertainment people but when I respect a person's body of work and the seem genuine and down to earth, I will act like a fan. I want to see this as I haven't read the book and I vaguely remember watching the cartoon version when I was young, so I'm looking forward to it.

OMG!!! I am so excited about this movie!!! I am a fan of Aliens and the Alien franchise. Before I hyperventilate from the excitement, may I add that it has some actors I love like Charlize Theron, Idris Elba. Need paper bag. Not to mention, I am waaaaay overdue for a deep space thriller. Why do I feel faint?

I guess I should mention The Dark Knight Rises, but I will be honest with you, I love Anne Hathaway as an actress, but I'm not feeling her as Catwoman who so happens to be my favourite comic book character eva. I could be wrong, look at Heath Ledger as the Joker, which made him my favourite movie villain eva. The thing is I'm quite lackluster when it comes to this installment of this Batman series. I will be honest, I was not crazy about the first one, the second one I loved because of the Joker (I have the DVD), but this last one..... it better be good. That's all I have to say. One of my awesome Facebook friends, Ms. Andreen put together this playlist of trailers and some I have come across and some I haven't. To see the entire playlist, click here and below are my thoughts.

1. When I first saw this trailer, I wanted to see it even though I knew it would not come to Antigua. For one it is a story of struggle and perseverance and it appears to address so many layers from the frivolous (the fashion world) to the serious (female circumcision) to the endearing (finding one self). I'm definitely going to have to look for this on DVD to add to my collection.

2. Love it!! It reminds me of a movie back in the 80's, a coming of age story. I love that it reflects the human spirit and it is very inspirational. It also gives you a look into Africa so you see beyond the suffering and see the true nature of the people.

3. I love that this movie delves into something I haven't seen in films which is black homosexuality. I love the cinematography in this film and I don't know if it is because the main actress is unknown that I can see pass her and see the actress. For some strange reason she reminds me of Whoppie Goldberg, not for her physical presence, but her ability to convey emotion without words.

4. Okay, I think I have to move to the States and get NetFlicks and spend my weekends watching these movies. Talk about dynamic, plus this trailer makes me want to watch the movie. It is beautifully shot, the plot looks intriguing and I want to watch this.

5. The first thing that came to mind was: "Is this a recent film?" The feel is very 1970's, and I know they are speaking French, but even if they spoke English, the acting screamed French film. I will admit, I'm not a fan of French cinema, I am intrigued to see what happens in the end.

6. This one had me smiling like crazy. I want to watch this so much. We take education for granted but there are people out there that would do anything to be able to read and write. I am speechless. Somehow, I'm going to have to get NetFlicks or something so I can watch these movies and more that fly under the radar.

I'm sure you have heard the countless accounts of how bad off black women are in terms of finding a life partner. We are constantly bombarded by media generated content about how little black men are out there who are educated, available, not in jail or willing to settle down. Somewhere there is an unspoken rule that we should not date outside the race.

There are the funny looks, as though you are a representative for a whole race of people and you have let them down. The sad thing is it is acceptable for a black man to be with a white woman but God forbid if a black woman is with a white guy or asian or indian. It is also acceptable for a black woman to have kids out of wedlock. So is it safe to deduce that society would rather us be alone than be with someone outside of our race? Then again, it's truly the loud ignant (note not ignorant but ignant) folk who have a problem with interracial coupling in general.

Don't get me wrong though there are also some internal problems to get past. For instance, will the non-black man understand my hair? Will he understand my culture? Well, my colouring is not the same as the colouring of his race, will he like what he sees? What does he see when he looks at me? Does he see the stereotypical black woman or does he see me?

I know being black is something to be proud of, my fore parents had gone through so much and persevered, but they fought so hard to be viewed as equals to other races. In being equals, race should take a back seat to the character of the individual. It should not divide people but bring them to a place where they can exist on common ground.

So how do I get past it? Once again, open mind and open heart. I saw a clip from a Tyra show, where a Native American woman said her father taught her to look a person in their eyes and see them not the colour of their skin. I'm paraphrasing, of course. From now on, I will look into people's eyes and try to see their souls.

One of the things I’ve learned to appreciate about men is when they wear cologne. I’m guessing this is another throw back to my dad since he and his father have a thing for cologne. The thing is I won’t be able to tell you that I like one cologne over another; I just know when the scent is working with the individual. I don’t know what it is but it also creates a nice little atmosphere of yum yum. Bear with me here…..

Just imagine a good looking guy walking towards you and just when he gets close, you smell the most divine scent. It’s is not overpowering but you just want to get close and just exist in his personal space. LOL.

As great as the great smelling guy can be, there are drawbacks, for example:

Wearing a cologne that older men wear – Please note smell is the senses that is associated with memory. Why would any decent woman want to devious things with a man that smell like her dad or even worse, her grandfather.

Spraying all over excessively – I apologize for the TMI in advance. So one evening, while getting to know a guy on a deeper plane, I was kissing his chest and …… well let’s leave the rest for another day, and he tasted bitter. I didn’t say anything and I continued to pursue that line of thought but it did leave a bad taste in my mouth (pun intended) and I would think twice about kissing a guy in that fashion.

Don’t wear the same cologne every day – I am not saying put on cologne everyday, keep that for special occasions. Keep it for special outings, just so that we know that you really want to put your best foot forward.

Less is more – Just put on enough that will peak a woman’s interest at a couple paces away and make her want to come closer. Imagine when you smell your favourite dish as soon as you come home and it pulls you to the kitchen, that is what your cologne is supposed to do.

I would say to a guy, either spend some time in a perfume store and try out scents that work for you, or just get a great smelling soap or aftershave. If anything get a girlfriend, a sister or a good female friend to guide you in the right direction. Oh, and remember, you are a man, so smell like one, I don't want to be smelling something I would wear on a man, not cute.

So for the great smelling men out there, I appreciate you.

Note Pad Tutorial

Since high school I have had a thing for note pads. I always had to have one handy, and I would either be doodling in it, writing poetry or making quick notes to myself. Yes, people, I had a "journal" before it became cool, I know, so hipster of me.

Anyway, I have been on a recycling kick for some time now, it's just hard for me to throw away something that I know can be recycled. I just don't want my water bottle or my can in some landfill long after I'm dead.

Don't worry, this is not a recycle or die post. This is a tutorial on how to make a note pad out of cardboard and an old almanac/desk thingy. So here is where we start.

Let me begin with where I work, I work at a hardware store and we sell carpenter pencils. They come 30 to a box and this is the box.

I won't be using the box because I can still use that for when a customer buys nails and instead of using a paper bag, we throw the nails into the box.

What I will be using is this, they actually cut these pieces of cardboard out to fill out the box of pencils. When I saw it I just could not throw it out, it had too much potential.

Earlier this year, I had volunteered at a book fair hosted by a local book store and they were giving these away.

Unfortunately, I don't really use them, put I had planned to use the back of them since they were blank.

I lined up a page of the desk thingy and marked out the width and the length of the pages.

Then I measured them and made a template as seen below. I used the front as I still wanted to use the template page in the actual note pad.

I then selected 11 sheets of the desk thingy and lined them up with the template sheet. Then with my metal ruler and a utility knife blade, I cut. Now for the safety issue: I am a pro (LOL). No seriously, in college I hacked off a piece of my left index finger doing crazy stuff like this. So for everyone else, a proper utility knife is your best bet, a guillotine is even better and please for the love of God, keep your fingers far from the blade.

I prefer to cut the width first as you will only have to cut once as oppose to cutting and then moving the ruler and cutting again. Also don't think that you will get a quick cut, you will have to go over it a couple times to cut all the sheets.

Then I cut along the length. This gives me 72 sheets of paper for my note pad.

Almost there......

The first note pads I made, I had used staples, the problem with that is the staples didn't make it through all the pages and they eventually rusted. This time around I'm using prong bases. I used the top part of the prong base to mark where I will be punching the holes on the front page.

Then with my trusty hole punch, I went to work. This is when I wish I had cable, comes in handy for the tedious tasks.

I then took one of the pages and marked where I will be punching the hole in the cardboard.

I poked the bottom part of the prong base through the pages and through the cardboard.

Then finish it off with the poking the bottom part through the top part of the prong base and folding the prongs in.....

and voila, a note pad

Now, you are probably thinking, "Well, I don't work in a hardware store and I won't find a perfectly shaped piece of cardboard." The truth is you can take any piece of cardboard and mold it to your ideal.

In fact, you can also take to independent pieces of cardboard and bind them together with the pages in between with the prong base. In that case, cut about an inch from the top of the front cover along the width but don't cut through, this will allow you to bend the cover up.

These note pads are great as gifts or you can use them instead of buying. Also how cool is it when someone asks where you got it and you can say, "Oh this, I made this."

There are many reasons why I would boldly wear the dunce cap but the main one is when I talk myself out of a possible suitor. Yeah I used the word, I can go old school too, suitor. I even wrote a poem about it, want to read it, here it is.

Basically, I would see an attractive male specimen and all the visual points are there, but right after the build up, there is the demolition. What is his deal? Is he in a relationship? Is he married? Is he gay? Would he be interested in me? and on and on and on. Even if he was interested in me, I've already talked myself out of the running. As I said, I'm an idiot.

So how do I rectify this? Well, I've already started, I'm building up my confidence so that I view myself as a worthy contender and someone worth a hello and a conversation. I know it's also a matter of shifting perspective once more, I complain about people putting labels on me in the first Why Am I Single post, but I turn around and put labels on others, shame on me. Then again, we are all hypocrites. Another way of moving forward is living my best life and to stop figuring out what the next person is thinking or their status. Leave my mind and heart open, even if I get hurt I will become stronger for it. It's like a scar, you get cut and the skin grows over but thicker. Hopefully, I don't get hurt too much.

The man who takes the time to put together his look. He knows his body, he knows what he likes and he know how to pull of a look that will make him proud and will turn heads.
The man who is just naturally stylish. I would say it is more nurture than nature but he can wake up, go to the closet, pull a few items and look great.

Although I like the latter a wee bit more than the former, I have love and respect for both. There is something about a man who takes pride in his appearance that is very appealing. So to the stylish men out there, I appreciate you and I knew you existed before Kanye West stepped on the scene.

For some strange reason, my relationship and maternal status is everybody's damn business. Unfortunately, this line of questioning makes my biological clock ring just a wee bit louder and like an idiot, I ask the universe for a man without giving specifics. Within a couple days, the universe delivers a man who just doesn't..... deliver.

Yes, he is a man, but there is no chemistry, no intellectual synergy, no "I so vibe with you and can spend an evening with you just talking", basically, nada. But, I give him a chance because maybe, just maybe he isn't that bad. Maybe, just maybe he has some redeeming qualities that are buried deep, deep, way deep within. I settle even though all my instincts say run like the wind.

The universe has this sad sense of humour, where you are in a relationship with someone and the ideal person comes along and this song comes to mind

Then the opportunity slips by and I'm still stuck with the no chemistry man, then I take a good look at life and realize that no, this is not going to work. And I do what is best for me, what good is it to be with someone if I can't give myself completely to them. Why give them a cup of water, leaving behind a great big lake? Why tuck away all the different aspects of me, just because they just won't get that when I get mad, I start speaking with an accent or in another language. Or some of the most creative and loving people I know are gay and by them speaking badly about gays puts me in a position where I will set them straight. No pun intended.

I read somewhere something that went I am strong enough to wait for the right one and I co-sign that. I co-sign it, because I have settled in the past and it just robs a little piece of me and I somehow cease to be real with myself. Does that even make sense, it doesn't matter because it's my truth. I want love, companionship, support and good conversation to while away the years and I just don't think I should just settle for any old person to meet those needs. I'm just saying.

This is a personal Male Appreciation which basically means this is my preference. Just throwing out a disclaimer.

I like bare necks on a man, by bare neck I mean no tattoos at all on the neck. Don't get me wrong, I like tattoos, for one, I have a tattoo and I've also mintioned it before in Male Appreciation #7. The thing is I'm not a fan of it on the neck.

It might just be me but I'm not a fan of seeing ink peeking out a the collar of a man wearing a suit. Perhaps, it is also because the neck is such a small space that it just doesn't do the artwork any justice. People opposed to tattoos would say it looks like the wearer is branded and I think the same when I see ink on the neck. It's even worse when it's a person's name *smh*.

It is also a distraction, let me explain. Earlier this year, I discovered that one of my errogenous zones is the side of my neck, below the ear. So I figue if that spot works for me, maybe it will work on others. Now imagine, if you please, going in to kiss, lick or bite someone in that tender spot below their ear and you find "LaWanda" or "Xavier".

First thing I will think is "What is this ghetto shyte?" I'm being honest. The next question is "Who is the person inked into your neck?" If it is an ex, I'm done, "It was nice knowing you, goodbye." (Kimolisa's Tattoo Rule #1: Don't get a tattoo with a boyfriend's/girlfriend's name, MAYBE husband/wife, but never BF/GF.) If it is a mom/dad/child - "Awwww, that's so nice, but I'm no longer in the mood." How can I be if I have the image of his mom/dad/child in my head. If it is a pet...... I won't even go there.

Basically, I love men's necks to be free of tattoos and piercing. I love a smooth neck that I can do beautifully, wonderful things that would result in pleasure for both parties. I like the idea that there is nothing peeking out of the collar. Honestly speaking, a tattoo is suppose to enhance your look, giving people an insight into who you are and if it doesn't, it's a waste of ink, time and spoils a perfectly good piece of skin.

So, to the majority of men who have bare necks, I appreciate you.

Last night, I went to a screening of Miss Representation that was put on my The Department of Gender Affairs and August Rush (the same group that puts on Expressions: Poetry At The Pub). I've mentioned this documentary on this blog under the post, Worth Watching. It had shown twice on OWN, unfortunately I don't have cable so I missed it both times. I was so happy when I found out that there was going to be a screening that I made sure I was there at the appointed time. There was also time allotted afterwards for discussion. Now, my take on it......

I liked it, it just affirmed some of the things I've been thinking about like the fact that women in movies and TV are either eye candy or looking for love. It was also an eyeopener when it came to the statistics where the number of teen girls with depression had doubled over the last ten years or the fact that women represent 51% of the population but hold less than 30% of the seats in government and on the boards of major companies (and I'm being generous with that percentage).

I also found it interesting that the media focuses most of its money trying to get the 18-37 male demographic, neglecting to recognize that a major group that watches television are women. One of the things that I've been thinking about is the hyper-sexualization of the media and this documentary had presented my thoughts in a visual format, but went a step further and showcased some of the things that I had not noticed. For instance, I never noticed how short Tinker Bell's dress was.

This was not an all woman, lambaste men documentary, well in my oppinion anyway. I see it as a call to arms for women to think outside the box that we were conditioned to exist in and to pursue jobs and roles that were not held by women. This documentary brought to my attention that perhaps the reason men "hold" women back is because they don't know how to perceive a strong, smart woman. It is easy to put women in a box but what if exist outside their box. Does it make men uncomfortable?

During the discussion after the screening, one woman pointed out that it is not a matter of men and women, it is about having self-confidence. When she said that, everything clicked into place for me. If a man or woman is self-confident, they would not feel threatened by the gains of others, in fact they are more likely to support and encourage the person. Also, the roles of men and women are so ingrained in our societies that it is hard for the majority to be strong enough to accept change.

God, I can go on and on, but I am loathe to write long posts because I start to ramble. But I will leave with this point, I will be honest, I was not a fan of Condoleezaa Rice. Looking back at it, it was more a result on the president she was under and the policies they brought forward. I didn't really made an oppinion based on her as an individual, I started to have a new oppinion of her after seeing an interview she did on The Daily Show. Now The Daily Show is very liberal and unlike a lot of conservative, Republican figures she was cool and collect and answered Jon Stewarts questions respectfully and with a smile. She had that same engaging poise in this documentary and I have no shame in saying she is a great role model for women who want to go into politics.

To end at last, great documentary, check out the Miss Representation site, a lot of good stuff and for my part, I will try to put out more post that will encourage thought in you and debate is always great.

Answer #2: Childhood issues

When I was 8,9 or 10, I was molested on more than one occasion and that messed with my head a bit. Then as I started to develop, I was getting a lot of unwarranted attention from grown men and that did a number on me too.

Let me explain, the best I can. I think in the Catholic church or somewhere that there is an age of reason which is I think 7. Don't quote me on this mind you. But when you turn 7 you are suppose to know better when it comes to your actions. I believe from about that age going forward that you really take a good look at the opposite sex and see a distinct difference. Sometimes you start having crushes on certain people and yadda yadda, you might not rough house as much as you used to, well in the case of girls. For me, that is the age where you form your beliefs of relationships with the opposite sex and most times it's a pure thing, but what happen if that pure thing has been tainted.

Between the molestation and the unwanted attention, I tried not to gain the attention of the opposite sex. In a way, I became asexual, just not being interested in relationships. Looking back at it, it was more a punishment for letting someone take advantage of me. Also, I believed that no one would like me because of what happened.

The sad thing is something like that happening in your childhood can rob you of so much. Because of it I slouched a lot, I became very introverted, very shy and quiet. Didn't try new things. I remember one time, my family and I were in Trinidad with some family friends and where we staying had a pool table. I have a strong like for pool that borders on love even though I can't play. One day, I went over and tried my hand at it, a man had come in the room and tried to "teach" me how to play. I didn't try to play on that table again.

Okay, too much info? yes, but that is something I have to work through. It is so easy to blame everything outside of yourself for your problems, but a simple shift of perspective can do wonders. Now I just have to train myself to see men as non-threatening, as well as be able to identify the dogs.

Of course, I went awwww and felt all good about being a woman, but it is the same for men. Well, the smile part, oh you get what I mean. There is something about seeing a guy smile and I mean the smile that involves the eyes. It just encourages me to try to make him smile more. It's like I won the lottery. It's no surprise that my favourite movie quote ever is "Why so serious?"

Honestly speaking, there is so much for us to be sad about. Between the economy, the environment, the lack of connections with people and not their online identity, but a smile, a genuine smile can make anyone forget about all that.

So stop the mean mugging and give momma a smile, because I really appreciate it.

This is so awesome because it reminds me that I am such a small part of the universe and that is not a bad thing because with that knowledge I feel like I can do anything. I want to see the northern lights in person. It gave a truly new perspective because this is what aliens would see if they popped by Earth. Also never thought of looking down at lightning. A real eye opener.

Why Am I Single #1

One evening, I was in the company of a man and he asked point blank,

"Why are you single? you are so nice."

To this I mumbled some nonsensical thing, but it triggered a thought for a series of blog posts where I answer that question thoroughly. I believe that all (or at least most) of the answers to people's problems can be found within, it's just to ask. It's something like that book, Conversations with God, where by simply sitting down and asking the questions, you will get the answers and sometimes you won't like the answers. I will try to be consistent. These posts might be amusing, hopefully insightful and at least for me it will be a worthy exercise.

So, why am I single?

Answer #1: I look like a christian.

Honestly, I don't mean to look like one or act like one, but for some strange reason, people put the label of christian on any and everybody who lives a moral, polite life. The truth is I am a non-practicing Pentecostal with leanings towards Atheism. But how does that impact on my relationship status?

Well, the men I would fancy would think I am a bible thumper who would try to convert them, not knowing that I have yet to read the bible in it's entirely, I have yet to read a decent portion. Yes, I'm soft spoken, well spoken and can hold a decent conversation on most topics even religion but I am not a christian. I can do things in the bedroom that can make grown men's toes curl, let's see a good christian woman do that.

Then there are the christian men who approach me and are taken aback that I don't attend church. I try not to have debates about religion, believing that it is a personal choice, but these men think it's their duty to get me in a church. They refuse to believe that God and I are cool with the relationship we are in and we both accept that Jesus is a pretty decent fellow. Also, why should I commence relations with someone if we can't agree on such a fundamental issue of how we spend a Sunday.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not a church fearing heathen, if I have to, I will go to church but it's not part of my lifestyle. It's more a matter of people jumping the gun and putting a label on you without getting the 411 on who you really are. So to all the regular, intelligent, fun men out there, just come over and say hi, I don't bite and I promise I won't drop a scripture during our conversation.

From Tissue Holder to Purse - Tutorial

Last Sunday I showed you the purses I made using the napkin holder tutorial in this post, and as promised here is the tutorial. As I said last week, I found this tutorial on how to make a tissue holder and I made it, then decided to take it one step further and make a purse with a keyring.

I started with the fabric of choice, the liner fabric and fusible interfacing cut in the dimensions : 6" x 7 1/2". I chose to use the interfacing because this particular fabric is incredibly light weight. The first deviation from the original tutorial is the addition of a zipper. I chose a contrasting colour for the liner fabric and the zipper because it complimented the main fabric and I tried a colour that was close to the main colour and it was quite ...... meh. LOL.

Iron the main fabric to the fusible interfacing. Line up the edge of the zipper to the edge of the main fabric with the front of the zipper facing the main fabric.

Place the liner fabric on top, ensuring that all the edges are lined up and sew.

Fold the main fabric so that its edge lines up with the other edge of the zipper.

Then fold the liner fabric and line up all the edges. At this stage you can pin the edges in place so that it is easier to sew.

Open up the zipper so that the main and liner fabric are laying on each other like below.

Sew the main and liner fabric at the top of the zipper where it lies flat.

Cut the edges off including the zipper. Sorry for the terrible pic, but you get the idea.

Flip the fabric so the right side is facing out. You can use a closed scissors or even a pen or pencil to push out the corners.

Press it flat with an iron, taking care to press neatly along the zipper.

Close the zipper just below the top. If you take the zipper too high, you will encounter some difficulty sewing along the top.

Take a small piece of fabric with the dimensions, 2" x 1 1/2", fold it and sew about 1/2" away from the fold. Turn it inside out and press with an iron.

Sew the bottom of the purse, going over the sides with two rows of stitches. Then Fold the small tube of fabric in half and tuck it in at the top to one side of the zipper. Sew along the top, going over the entire top with two rows of stitches.

In the original tutorial the bottom would have had a clean finish as it was tucked in, but as I had to make allowance for the zipper, a raw edge was left behind. So instead of leaving it raw, I used my pinking shears and cut along the bottom.

Now to turn it inside out. I will be honest and say that it isn't easy undoing a zipper from the wrong side, but the trick is to maneuver the tab of the zipper up and it will come down easily. Turn the purse inside out, close back the zipper and press with an iron, preferably along the corners and top and bottom.

Voila a purse! Just loop a key ring through the loop and you are good to go.

There is just so much I could say but let me focus on what I like. I like his complete body of work, from his books, his comedy acts, his shows and movies, those he starred in and those he acted in. I also admire his work ethics, without them he would not have accomplished what he had. I also love that he now says whatever he feels, perhaps that's associated with age, but if some issue bothers him he makes it public. My favourite thing is his version of a black family, it is truly something to aim for.

Charlize Theron!!!!! My living favourite actress!!! There is no doubt that I'm going to watch this. I still have goosebumps. LOL

I would watch this for Michael Caine, then Dwayne Johnson, then the spanish guy and then because it looks like fun.

I don't normally watch military films but this one looks good.

The trailer looks good, but I'm still pissed at the movie because the woman who has been burned has male like tendencies than female so it will be likened to Bourne when it should be a completely new film. If it doesn't live up to the Bourne films it would have been a total waste. Basically, don't try to be a good copy, be a great original, I'm just saying.

From Napkin Holder to Purse W/ Keyring - Tutorial

The other day I came across this tutorial on how to make a napkin holder, and I liked it so much that I went home and made it using some fabric I had sitting around. I then got the idea to give it a loop and attach a key ring. I don’t know about you, but nothing is more frustrating than looking around you bag for something small. Having the key ring makes it easy to hook it on a zipper or something stationary on your bag.

After I made the napkin holder with the key ring, I thought it would make a great purse by simply sewing in a zipper. It was big enough to hold cash, ID’s and even keys. What I also like about it is I can slip it in my back pocket or slip my finger through the ring and run a quick errand.

I did run across some obstacles though, for instance, fabrication. It is better to use medium or heavy weight fabric. A light fabric is just too flimsy and even though I used interfacing, it still didn’t win me over.

Another obstacle was how do I get the zipper in? That is for me to know and you to find out *wink* No really, this is where you deviate from the original napkin holder tutorial. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to do a step by step tutorial, but I should have it done by next Sunday, so be on the look out.

As you can see, I got a little sew happy.

It just dawned on me that I haven't done an Interior Love in a while, so here are some interiors I'm loving.

I love this bath tub!! Can you imagine that chandelier lit with a soft yellow light and just melting away the day's stresses in a hot bath.

I love that this seat is close to an open door, so you get the open air, outside vibe but still the inside security in case it rains. It looks comfortable and I would like to curl up with a book and just chill.

This looks so cozy and unlike other interior pics, it looks like someone lives there.

This is the first pic of this post on desire to inspire. I love this home because of the cast iron balcony railings and the use of art throughout the home.

Shaken Not Stirred Tutorial

I've been planning to do this for a long time, and here it is the Shaken-not-stirred.us tutorial for the free printable which you can find here. This tutorial also works with the other printables available through the etsy store. Just to bring you up to speed, Shaken-not-stirred.us are mini recipe cards, but instead of recipes for soups or cakes, the recipes are for cocktails. Check out the website here.

To begin print out the two printable sheets, click here and here to for the PDF files. It's best to print on card stock paper as it is sturdier.

The first PDF contains 10 mini recipe cards for cocktails,

Cut along the sides first,

then cut the cards out.

The second PDF contains the envelope which will hold the mini recipe cards.Tres chic, n'est-ce pas?

Cut out the envelope

Fold the side flaps along the lines.

Apply glue to the bottom half of the side flap.

Fold the bottom flap along the line. Open the side flaps to make it easier to get a clean fold.

Fold in the side flaps, then the bottom flap. Press the bottom flap until the bottom flap is secured to the side flaps.

Fold the top flap along the line. If you don't have a scoring tool, you can use the bottom of your scissors to create a clean fold.

Voila!!! A cute little envelope for your mini cocktail recipe cards.

The envelope and the mini recipe cards are small enough to fit in your purse or to slip into your back pocket.

If you want to make them last longer you can have the mini recipe cards laminated and they will still be able to fit into the envelope. The Classic Cocktail series contain a lot of cocktails that should be known by a decent bartender, but if you want to try cocktails that are a little more interesting checkout the following printables available from my etsy store.

I am way, way, waaaaaay overdue for posting a Male Appreciation post. I have been in the middle of a project and I will be honest, I didn't know what to write for this post. I was almost going to do a post of Men's backs inspired by something my sis had said and this post by one of the people I follow on tumblr, self esteem boosters, only to realize that I already did a post on men's backs. So what should I write about? Then I remembered the open mics I frequent, they are a lot of fun and it's so cool to see the guys get excited about going up there and reading their work. So that is what this post is all about, when men are passionate about what they do.

It could be building a house, or developing a program or cleaning a building, when a man is really into what he does for a living it is a powerful thing. It's not only the fact that he is loving what he is doing, but he is doing it well and he inspires you to do what you love. To see a man either smiling and bursting to show you what he has accomplished is just exciting. I don't know about you, but he would give off this energy that jumpstarts your own energy. Then there are moments when he's deep in concentration, there might even be a slight frown, but in that state you know he is going to get whatever it is done.

So, to the men who work hard at the things they love, I appreciate you.
